Temple Night

Rusty & I attended the IF temple tonight.  It was our ward temple night, and we had a chapel session at 6:15 with the Hamer ward too.  After the session, we stayed for an extra 20  minutes to do sealings.  It was a spiritual & emotional evening for me.

I am thankful for the temple & my testimony.  And the good news:  Rusty & I are going again on Friday!  We are trying to attend at least once a month--on one of our dates.  And my personal goal is to attend all of the ward chapel sessions.  I am going to have juggle my schedule each month, but I think it will work.  Instead of taking Callum for his allergy shot on Thursday (the week of temple night), I will get him out of school 1/2 hour early so we can go on Wednesday (the allergy office closes at 5  M-W but stays opened 1 hour longer on Thursdays).

Moving Ethan to Rexburg

Monday (Jan. 3rd) was packed full!  It took all day to get Ethan moved in, fees paid, & all those fun little things needed to get done to get him ready for college.
(I kept this picture even though it is blurry because it shows more of his living room).
I am thankful I was able to be there for him.  It sure brought back a ton of memories being back on campus (Ricks for me, BYU-I for Ethan).
I guess I didn't think of taking more pictures of campus, shopping, & all the other activities we did because of the COLD weather--and the fact that we were going a hundred miles an hour to try to get everything done!
I want to write about my day so I can remember (& maybe one day Ethan will appreciate that I have these thoughts & memories written down) this important day in Ethan's life.
(These pictures are all of Ethan's bedroom--we decided to pay a little extra so he could have his own bedroom.  There will be 3 other boys in his apartment.)
The morning started out "slow"--we left about an hour later than we planned.  As soon as we got to Rexburg, we checked Ethan into his apartment.  After unloading all of his stuff, we found the campus map & walked (hiked uphill) to the Manwaring building to get his I-card.  Surprisingly, there wasn't a line of people until after he was already getting his ID card.  Then we headed to financial aid in the Kimball building (which was 1 building south).  There were numerous lines, so we picked one to stand in & I sent Ethan to the information desk to figure out which one we needed to be in.  While he was gone, I started looking through the school newspaper & found the page on financial aid.  I had just figured out where we needed to go when Ethan got back & told me we were in the wrong line.  Thankfully, the line we needed to be in was short--we only had to wait for 1 person in front of us.
After making sure everything was paid for & getting a check for his housing, we headed back to the Manwaring building to pick up his books.  When Ethan registered for his classes, it was advised to reserve his textbooks--the bookstore pulls the books that are required for his classes, boxes them up, and has them all ready for you.  So we got in the short line (only a handful of students in front of us) & got a box of books. And instead of having to try & sell them back later, we just return them back to the bookstore.  So we are in reality "renting" the books. It appears to be a much simpler process then when I got my books (searching the shelves for the numerous books needed, paying outrageous prices--esp. for new books, trying to sell them back for a few dollars at the end of semester).  For this semester, his books cost about $150.

After getting his books, we hiked (downhill) to his apartment.  Then we drove the 10-15 minutes to Wal-Mart.  And can I say NEVER go to Wal-Mart on the first day of college!!!!!!!!!!  It was PACKED!!  It would have been nice if we had been able to get all of his "stuff" before we got to Rexburg, but that was not the case.  But even with the shoulder-to-shoulder, cart-to-cart traffic at the store, we were able to get everything he needed (at least for a few days) & $200 later, got it all back to his apartment (after a quick stop thru Arby's drive-through).  We hauled his stuff into his room (and Benjamin was a great helper!) & then Ethan got his computer working (w/internet) so he could finish his apartment check-in.

I was getting a diaper bag out of the van to head back up to campus for the Get Connected orientation when I discovered Ben had a stinky diaper.  Since it was so cold, the wet-ones were frozen, so I just used wet paper towels.  We made it to the Hart gym & started searching for Ethan's I-team group (#7).  {Each new student was assigned a group based on where they live & ward they will be in, with 2 mentors--"older" students.  They had lots of activities & helps for the 2 days before classes started}
We finally found his group & sat in the gym.  Pres. Clark spoke to the students & parents, and then they held a question/answer session.  After that, they had the parents hug they student, & sent them off to a bbq while a parent's meeting was held.

I have to say that Benjamin was exceptionally well-behaved during the 2 hours I was in the meetings.  It wasn't until the last 10 minutes that he started being a noisy.  He even folded his arms and wanted Ethan to whenever someone new spoke (because they closed "..in the name of Jesus...." & he thought it was a prayer).

I do appreciate the spirituality that is felt & conveyed all over campus.  And Pres. Clark talked about that also.  He said it isn't often that you can feel the Holy Ghost wherever you go on campus--classes, buildings, library, etc.

I know this post is extra long, but I'm going to go ahead & finish my day:  We were asked to turn off our phones during the meeting, so when I turned it back on, I saw that Rusty had called.  So I called him at the same time I was trying to get Ben a  (hundred) drink(s) from the drinking fountain.  I needed to get to the distribution center, DI, & Wal-Mart (shopping for me) before heading home.

So I had to carry Benjamin a bit farther that expected (and my left arm was stiff & sore the next day!).  By the time we got to the van & heading towards the stores, I realized it was Monday & the church stores close at 6 on Mondays (FHE night).  I made it to the distribution center at 5:58 & they let me sneak in & buy my scripture pencils (but they were out of the CTR rings). Benjamin had fallen asleep, so I had to carry him at the stores.

I went to Wal-Mart (which was still busy, but not as bad as the afternoon) only to discover I had lost my list. So I was trying to remember what I had written down over the last couple of weeks (& couldn't), so I just grabbed a few things I knew we needed, and headed back to Ethan's apartment (after a dinner stop at McD's--I figured that would be a shorter stop than Subway).  He didn't have a backpack, & so I found him one at Wal-Mart.

After I ate my dinner, I dropped Ethan off at the Hart gym for another activity with his I-team (introducing family home evening groups) & headed home.  I had Benjamin bundled up, wrapped in a blanket, & the heater on high, but the van really never did warm up (which is hard to do when the window is still duct-taped & the temp. is around 0).  So we were both chilled when we got home around 8:30.  We both had hot chocolate (I had 2 mugs) & I finally warmed up around midnight.

It was a great day!

Our Trip Home

Of course, a storm came just in time for us to travel in snow!
Here is Togwotee Pass above Dubois, Wyoming.
 The snow was plowed high!
(Disclaimer:  I did NOT take these pictures.  Ethan took them for me)

We made it to Pamela's in Thayne, WY & we watched "Sorcerer's Apprentice".  Then Friday morning (New Year's Eve day), we headed home (via Idaho Falls).  We were in Swan Valley, ID when a truck pulling snow mobiles passed us & flipped a rock up.  It hit the side window & instantly shattered the window.  Benjamin was sitting by that window and thankfully he wasn't hurt at all.  Some of the window must have fallen onto the highway, because although there was a lot of glass on Ben's lap, seat,  & floor by him, I don't think it was the whole window.

I was so shook-up, that my hands were shaking for about 5 minutes.  Rusty was in front of me, so he was a couple of miles ahead of me by the time Ethan got him called (I immediately pulled over when I heard the window shatter--and Brienna said the glass was all over Benjamin).  Pamela was behind me, so she pulled over too.

We got the big pieces of glass out of the van, moved the car seats (Ben's & Emmalee's) into Pamela's Jeep & then used the windshield cover as a tarp to cover the window.  Thankfully I carry a full roll of duct tape in the van so Rusty was able to cover the window securely.

I drove to the Ririe turn off, where Ethan took over so he could drive the van home.  Pamela, Ben, Emmalee & myself headed into Idaho Falls to get some groceries while Rusty, Zane & Callum went to Dubois in the truck, & Ethan & Brienna drove the van home.
I was too concerned about getting all the glass off of Benjamin, that I didn't think of taking a picture of the window until I was ready to get in the van to leave.

Monday I help Ethan get moved in to his apartment in Rexburg.  He starts classes Wednesday, and we have a Primary "birthday" party Wednesday after school.  We have a fun birthday present for the kids, but we want all of them to have it for the whole year.  So we will give it to them on Wednesday.  I will post more about that later, but it's a surprise for now.
Maybe I'll try to get an appointment to fix the window on Friday.

Happy New Year!!!

Hike to Popo Agie Falls

Zane & Emmalee all ready for the hike to the falls.  (Callum is climbing in the truck).

Popo Agie (pronounced "po-po-zsha") Falls is located above my hometown of Lander, WY.  For more information about the area, click here.
Rusty had this wonderful idea that I was in good enough shape to hike the mile and a half up to the falls--on a snow packed trail.  So to quote Rusty, "Michelle was a good trooper," and I huffed and puffed my way up the 1.5 miles trail.  The elevation change is about 500 feet.
Zane, Emmalee & Callum all had a good time, and thankfully they were good sports and waited for their momma.
Zane gave Emmalee piggy-back rides.  And this picture looks like we are hiking in the evening, but we were just in the shadow of the mountain.  We started our hike at 11:30 am and got back to the truck at 2:45 pm.
One of my many "rest stops" along the way (or maybe I'm just holding up the rock??).  I had to stop many, many times on the way up.  Hiking down the trail was much, much easier!  I'd like to say that Emmalee (at 5 years old) was the slow hiker, but the slowest one was 100%  me!
We are almost there!!
Daddy carrying Emmalee on his shoulders.
This at at the lower falls--Emmalee didn't want to get too close to the edge.
I made it! (Rusty took this picture because he could see his reflection in my sunglasses--of him taking a picture
This is the upper falls--it was a lot harder to get to, and Emmalee really was scared here.  There was no flowing water, but the boys kept telling her we were walking on ice, so she was a bit scared!  You can see the ice in the background (by Emmalee).  Although I haven't been to the falls in the winter for a long time, I remember more ice over the falls.
Resting on the nice wood/log bench at the lower falls.
Resting again at one of the cool rock/cave spots just off the trail.
Rusty making sure I hadn't either died or slipped & fell.
Standing by the river.

Zane really liked the ice formations at the lower falls.

Daddy & Emmalee resting at the lower falls.  This is where we shared the orange, apple & 2 string cheeses that I packed in the water bag.
 Zane at the upper falls.
An ice formation we noticed on the hike down.
We are headed down the trail.
Callum slide down this part of the trail on his knees.
I walked on the side that had more snow, rather than ice.  Thankfully this was the worst part of the trail.  Although there a few other spots where there was some icy patches.

Christmas Eve & Christmas Day

Benjamin's ready for Christmas!
The kids were getting ready for bed on Christmas eve.

Emmalee is putting on her best behavior!
 Emmalee, Zane & Benjamin
 Callum doing his "cool" pose.

 Santa's presents on Christmas morning.
The kids couldn't wait any longer, so they woke Benjamin up.  He wasn't excited--until he opened his first present. (Zane was up at 4 am!!!  But he is "good" & waited until 7:30 to wake the ones that were still asleep.)
 Checking out the Santa gifts.
Now Benjamin is happy--he got Woody (from Toy Story) & his cowboy boot ("there's a snake in my boot")
And this is what Rusty got me--cross country skis.  Now we can go skiing at the land.

I thought I had more pictures, but I took a few videos of the kids opening presents, and can't seem to be able to post them on my blog.  I'm still working on that.
